It's not that I didn't like the site, or that I wasn't interested in the topic, services, or products offered. It's just that I wasn't ready to take action right now. So I clicked away and will probably forget about them. The danger of this happening at YOUR site is that you just lost a great prospect. After all, I'm pre-qualified. I was already interested in what you had to offer. I likely found your site via a search engine, Web directory, advertisement, article, or another promotion. I clicked through to your site because I wanted to learn more. But studies reveal that I'm most likely NOT going to take action the first time I visit your site. Have you heard the statistic that it takes about *seven* contacts before prospects are ready to buy? (That's a lot of times!) So how can you get the chance to contact me another *six* times? The answer is to CAPTURE me then and there that is, get my e-mail address. To do this, you'll have to offer me something valuable in return. If you just tell me to "sign up for our mailing list," you're not going to get squat. So what can YOU offer me? Here are some ideas that have been proven to work when done well. Of course, the *content* for all of these should tie-in to your business focus: 1. A free mini-mail course. These are becoming very popular right now. You simply create a few e-mails' worth of content to spread out over a certain amount of days. You'll need an e-mail autoresponder to do this, which allows me to sign up for your course automatically. Many sites seem to offer five- or seven-day courses, and many of them are awful. So here's a chance for YOU to stand out: Make sure yours offers really useful or interesting content that's more "how to" than salesy. Then in the last e-mail, tell me how your services/ products will further help me --- lead me on to the next step. 2. A free e-zine (e-mail newsletter). If you can produce new content on a regular basis, this is your BEST option, because you're receiving permission to contact me (and market to me) again and again! You'll always be on my mind. And if you're a solo professional who is marketing your own services, this gives you *multiple* chances to prove your worth and gain my trust over time. The only drawback to this option is that publishing an e-zine requires a good amount of time and effort on a regular basis, but the rewards will be worth it. 3. A special VIP/promotion list. If I like what I see, and you give me the chance to receive *special offers* that will save me money at your site, I'll be sure to sign up for your list. They offer designer clothes and accessories (e.g. BCBG, Fendi, Prada I'm salivating right now!) at discount prices with exceptional customer service. Throughout their site and when you place an order, there are invitations to sign up for "discounts, exclusive offers, and first looks." Count me in! 4. A free special report or e-book. Here's another neat idea give people a special report or short e-book related to your topic of interest. Not sure where to start? Try a top-10 list of tips, a list of relevant resources, or a collection of articles you've already written. The more "how-to," the better give me real, useful information. But of course make sure it implies that YOU and YOUR BUSINESS are the best resource in the end. This is a delicate balance to achieve, but it's not as hard as you may think. And at the end of your content, tell me how your services/products will further help me. (Again, lead me on to the next step.) 5. Don't forget to follow up! Once you capture a list of prospects, you'll need to contact them again. We'll cover the art of follow up in an upcoming article. Of course, if you're publishing an e-zine, that's already set. Wining a new customer and getting an existing customer back onto your premises is not as straight forward as it used to be few decades ago. Customers are much more savvy, thanks to all the slick marketing campaigns they get exposed to to every day of the week. Then how do successful businesses do that? Lets us do a little exercise with your business. Be as honest as possible: How unique is your product? Can it be bought else where? What price do you charge your customer? Is this the cheapest within miles? Can you list 3 reasons why a customer should speak to you first before placing an order with any one else? It could be that you provide a great service... is it the best around? May be for you but what does your customer think, honestly? May be you give your customer a satisfaction guarantee that your competitors cannot beat or come any where near to. You have probably gathered that being successful in business is all about differentiating yourself from the rest - it could be on price, service, product or some thing else. Every industry has competitors and it is hardly likely to ever ease. If you are in a fortunate position where your business can afford external business consultants then you probably know that they would recommend doing competitor analysis revamping branding of your business negotiating prices upstream (suppliers) so that you can sell them on cheapand so on and so forth! A combination of these strategies can work, and some times they do not. There is no guarantee of any kind, ever. One strategy that does work, especially for small or medium sized businesses is giving more than what customer expects. This makes them want to deal with you more often, and also refer their friends to you as well, taking the your cost of new customer acquisition even lower. The trick is - you do not have to give them more of the product they are buying. Give them some thing that is low value to you but is regarded highly by your customer. Your competitors are probably advertising in in newspapers and other media outlets to generate leads. you can start with your existing customers and ask them for referrals. Offer them some thing in return, like draw to a vacation some where nice if they refer a friend to your business. You do not need to give vacation to every one, just run this contest for a few weeks and then pull out a draw. Perhaps the profits generated by acquiring new customers can pay for the vacation expenses. But since you have new customers in your database, you can hope to do more business with them in future. Being creative in business is one sure way to win. Advertising does not always bring profitable customers, referrals do. When people recommend you to their associates, hard work is already done and relationship half built. They are ready to do business. Go take orders and start up-selling. Referrals are often a win-win situation all around, for your customers (because they may get a vacation or other incentive for just introducing), their friends (they are dealing with a trusted source) and of course, you. In a study published in Harvard Business Review not very long ago, it was concluded that 5% increase in retained customers increased the profitability by an average 80% for most industries. Existing customers are your gold pot. By being creative you can use that resource to get even more customers. Businesses do not have to come up with large advertising or marketing budgets to generate fresh business. If you already have existing customers than they can be the best source ore business. Strange then that most marketing departments in large companies still spend more than 50% of their budget on new customer acquisition who are least profitable in the first place. By Esther Smith Lets begin with your Profile as home plate. If you ever want to get to first base with any dream partner you better have a killer Title and a magnetic Profile. Each person has unique features of his/her personality and their profile should reflect these. A home run is developed over time, but it all begins here with the Profile. There are some pretty tired words being used in profiles. Yeah, we all like to eat dinners out, and take long walks on a beach or in the park. Lets try to be different. And even if some people really DO think youre gorgeous or handsome, its in poor taste to mention it and comes off like bragging. So thats a skip; theyll move on to the next profile. One I read even claimed he has never had a cavity! (Whats his point?). Im trying to say that there isnt much originality in any of these lines. Most are overused. One-upmanship takes a fresh approach. But not all of us are writers we know that. There isnt a writer alive that hasnt stared at a white sheet of paper, or in this case a white screen, at one time or another. But like everything else, there is help if you look for it. As I read a series of profiles, I really wonder if they are addressing a target-date. When you have a particular dream date in mind, your profile must be geared to attracting him/her. If you are not interested in partnering with single moms, you must design your words to imply that. If your preference is a tallish guy with all his hair, you have to find a way to hint at this without being blatantly obvious or hurtful. If you have faults that friends find annoying, its best to be upfront with them rather than go through weeks of correspondence only to be rejected and find yourself back to first base. Lets understand the written word; aside from the dangers of being misread or misinterpreted, words on paper are totally one dimensional. Unlike meeting someone at a party or a cocktail lounge, your words have no tone, no body language, and no facial expression. In creative writing courses, one of the most important lessons is to write hypnotic sentences. Poets learn quickly how to move a reader making someone laugh, cry, or reminisce about a past experience. They do all this with mere words. As online dating moves from profile, to first response, to contact by phone, to eventually meeting each level now has one added element; voice, body language, facial expression and tone. Now you have plenty of cues as to your next move -- or not. But this advantage takes time to acquire. In the meantime, you must depend on words to express your feelings and create an image in the mind of your reader. Lastly; photos. Its a given that if you dont include one, your profile is dead in the water. Its sorta like the First Amendment it makes everyone think youre guilty even if youre not. The most common fear is that youre married and dont want a spouse, family or neighbors to see your picture on a dating site. Another skip! Realize this: not everyone in online dating is movie-star material. But if you post a photo with sun-glasses and a baseball cap, or as some gals do with hair hanging over of the face, people will get suspicious. Black&White photos went out of style about 40 years ago, so if yours is not in color we wonder if you dug out your high school yearbook picture. These are big-time skips. Because millions join online dating every month, it should be fun. We choose a complementary photo, write a personal profile and join our choice of dating programs. Surely among all of our responses is the one were looking for. If this doesnt happen, often the mistake we make is submitting the same photo and profile into a new dating program with the same results.
